MorPhi Delta Epsilon hosted its dodge ball tournament in support of Children's Miracle Network and its partner, Children's Hospital of LA. CMN helps provide financial assistance to low income families who may not be able to afford medical services for their child. Every year, Phi Delta Epsilon raises money to help fund for the medical services for kids to ensure that families aren't overwhelmed by their debts!

This year, we saw many teams come out and play! There were free snacks and water provided, and the winners got snazzy t-shirts. Congratulations again to Team Friendship for winning it all!

Welcoming our awesome ‪#‎PhiDEalumniofthemonth‬, we are interviewing our founding president, Justin Hoang! Justin is from sunny San Diego, and recently graduated this spring 2015 with a degree in Biochemistry.
Justin began PhiDE-Delta as the colony coordinator and later as the chapter’s first official president in the winter of his freshman year, and continued to senior year. Justin was also an awesome HPAC Peer Mentor, a volunteer, and a trainer at Loma Linda University Medical Center during his time at UCR. Currently, Justin is both studying for the MCAT and working as a medical scribe for the Desert Regional Medical Center. He plans to apply this June cycle to MD and DO programs for medical school!
We at Phi Delta Epsilon are grateful for his time as an awesome president, and characteristic persona! Here’s his interview.

How has PhiDE changed you as a person?
PhiDE has really just made be a better person all around, as corny as that sounds. It first taught me to be a leader and a professional not only in front of my peers, but also important figures on campus and off. It has also pushed me to be more sociable and open with other people. To be honest, I was pretty shy coming into UCR, but this fraternity has left me with lifelong friendships.

What are some highlights from your time as a member? Is there a particular moment that has changed you significantly?
Some of my fondest memories are just all the things we've accomplished as a fraternity whether it was getting our charter, winning second place at Phi Kapps dodgeball tournament, or receiving our chapter excellence award. But there were also so many moments that I still remember, just from retreat or hanging out off-campus.

Is there a particular vision you have for the fraternity? If so, what, and how should PhiDE work to achieve it?
I understand our chapter is always going to change. But please, never forget why we are all here in the first place. We came together to be a support group for one another and to push each other to be the most outstanding medical applicants on campus. What made us so great early on in our chapter's history was the fact that everyone was willing to do their part to make the chapter better. Everyone has their own vision of what they want this chapter to be, so if you are ever unhappy with the direction this fraternity is going, make a stand and do whatever it takes big or small to push the fraternity in a positive direction.
Our fraternity is amazing because it was the manifestation of all of our visions, and the product of all our hard work.

Steven Hough, founding class alumni and current medical student at UCR, shares about himself and his time at PhiDE and what made it so great!

1) Where do you come from?

I’m originally from the East Bay. Before coming down to Southern California for my undergraduate education at UCR, I spent most of my time in the cities around San Francisco and Oakland. I started school at UCR in 2010 and graduated with my B.S. in 2014. I worked for a year and now I am a MS1 at UCR’s School of Medicine.

2) Briefly describe your time at PhiDE, including why your reasons for joining the fraternity.

I was lucky to find PhiDE while it was still in the planning process. At the time, I was involved in a bunch of extra curricular activities, but most were either general interest or professionalism groups. PhiDE was offering a chance to meet with like minds and provide opportunities to further my interest in medicine. I am proud to have been a part of the founding class and believe my involvement in the fraternity was a major catalyst to further my medical education.

4) How has PhiDE changed you?

Before PhiDE I usually saw others as a distraction or hindrance while I was trying to become a “competitive medical school applicant.” After joining the fraternity, I realized that life gets A LOT easier when you have more support from your peers: academic, professional, or personal. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, you’re not going to be the first, and you definitely won’t be the last.

5) What are some highlights from your time as a member? Is there a particular moment that has changed you significantly?

Surprisingly hanging out at the letters all day. It might feel like a chore sometimes, but I had some of my favorite memories at the letters, being stupid and joking around. It was nice forgetting about all of your responsibilities for a bit and just feeling like a part of the campus again.

6) Is there a particular vision you have for the fraternity? If so, what, and how should PhiDE work to achieve it?

The founding class came together to form PhiDE to build a solid support system for each other. When we first began the process, nobody knew each other’s names or what year in school we were in, but we all knew that we were willing to start something new that wasn’t already in existence at UCR. We looked past the countless pre-health and professionalism groups, even if we were a part of them, because we wanted something better; not for a resume, but for our own benefit. If there is one thing I hope will transcend the classes its that realize that the fraternity was built so that we could all collaborate and so that we can all help each other through the stressful pre-med life. Even though there are opportunities for you to find resume builders while working with PhiDE, know that just being a part of the fraternity gives you a unique chance to interact with others who are going through the same struggles that you are and support each other. At the end of the day, anyone can list things on a resume, but it’s the qualities that you build by being together and working together that will give you an advantage in the future.

7) What is one message you wish to pass on to current members?

Going off of what I was saying. Just because you’re not scheduled to work a certain shift at the tables or appear at a specific event, keep communication lines open. Realize that PhiDE is a coalition of pre-meds, not a checkbox on your to-do list. Use your time wisely, and learn from each other. Also, as far as working towards becoming a doctor, take your time: there is no rush, seriously. Do what works best for you whether that might be slower or faster than others, by taking time off to work, having extra-curricular activities that nobody else does regardless if it has to do with medicine, it doesn’t matter. Find your pace, and keep going forwards. Any progress is good progress.

CA- Delta hosted the first annual Depression and Anxiety Awareness Week, on campus! Throughout the week (May 4th - May 8th), Delta Class held their philanthropy event; they hosted a Disneyland Ticket raffle to raise money for Children's Miracle Network. Within the week, CA- Delta had a card making event for giving cards to the patients in CHLA (Children's Hospital Los Angeles). On the last day, we had our former international president (Dr. Steve Soldinger) lecture about depression; he discussed about the symptoms, severity, and possible treatments of depression.

PFC Cook Off 2015

Phi Delta Epsilon participated in the PFC Cook Off, where each of the professional fraternities had to create an entree for two judges to taste. The mysterious ingredients involved ground turkey, sausage, caramel, black garlic sauce, and nacho cheese. Although Phi Delta Epsilon didn't place at the top three, we still enjoyed the event and the interaction with the other fraternities.

Dinner, entertainment, and presents were presented to our brothers as the sisters showed them how much they mean to the family and fraternity. We love you, brothers!
