Justin began PhiDE-Delta as the colony coordinator and later as the chapter’s first official president in the winter of his freshman year, and continued to senior year. Justin was also an awesome HPAC Peer Mentor, a volunteer, and a trainer at Loma Linda University Medical Center during his time at UCR. Currently, Justin is both studying for the MCAT and working as a medical scribe for the Desert Regional Medical Center. He plans to apply this June cycle to MD and DO programs for medical school!
We at Phi Delta Epsilon are grateful for his time as an awesome president, and characteristic persona! Here’s his interview.
How has PhiDE changed you as a person?
PhiDE has really just made be a better person all around, as corny as that sounds. It first taught me to be a leader and a professional not only in front of my peers, but also important figures on campus and off. It has also pushed me to be more sociable and open with other people. To be honest, I was pretty shy coming into UCR, but this fraternity has left me with lifelong friendships.
What are some highlights from your time as a member? Is there a particular moment that has changed you significantly?
Some of my fondest memories are just all the things we've accomplished as a fraternity whether it was getting our charter, winning second place at Phi Kapps dodgeball tournament, or receiving our chapter excellence award. But there were also so many moments that I still remember, just from retreat or hanging out off-campus.
Is there a particular vision you have for the fraternity? If so, what, and how should PhiDE work to achieve it?
I understand our chapter is always going to change. But please, never forget why we are all here in the first place. We came together to be a support group for one another and to push each other to be the most outstanding medical applicants on campus. What made us so great early on in our chapter's history was the fact that everyone was willing to do their part to make the chapter better. Everyone has their own vision of what they want this chapter to be, so if you are ever unhappy with the direction this fraternity is going, make a stand and do whatever it takes big or small to push the fraternity in a positive direction.
Our fraternity is amazing because it was the manifestation of all of our visions, and the product of all our hard work.
